Castle Thailand

The Thai Genaral Post Office is issuing a special set of postage stamps to commemorate Thai Heritage Day 2009 by depicting Prasat Hin Sdok Kok Thom, Prasat Hin Ta Muean, Prasat Hin Muang Tum, and Prasat Hin Phnom Rung, the stone castles in Old Khmer architecture in the Northeast of Thailand. With many days off during Songkran Festival it was a good chance for our trip to the Northeast and to follow these stone castles trail.

Prasat Hin Muang Tum is a Khmer temple of Hindu faith, believed to be constructed in the late 10th and early 11th centuries, in the Khleang and Baphuon styles. It consists of 5 stupas or towers built on the same laterite base. At the main tower a lintel was excavated and revealed icons depicting Hindu religious stories. It has a flat concentric plan, with a central sanctuary and two libraries surrounded successively by an inner enclosure, ponds, and an outer enclosure. At the four corners of the pond there are fixtures of 5-head naga, or mythical snake.

Admission: Bath100 or a package ticket of Bath150 which enables passes into Prasat Hin Muang Tum and Prasat Hin Phnom Rung in Burirum Privicne.
Leaving Prasat Hin Muang Tum we drove to Prasat Hin Phnom Rung, a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, and symbolises Mount Kailash, his heavenly dwelling. There had been many restorations and additions until the 13th century King Jayavarman Vll of the Khmer empire converted to Mahayana Buddhism and Hindu temples were altered to display images of the Buddha, and the entrie castle briefly became a Buddhist shrine ever since.
The principle tower of Prasat Hin Phnom Rung is in the main sanctuary, after the antechamber and the annex, ornate with sandstones carved in flora, yogis, and gods of the compass points. Every year during early March, April, September, and October tourists are treated to the marvel of the solar beam phenomenon directly through the 15 gates, though specific days have to be confirmed with Phnom Rung Historical Park
Admission: Bath100 or a package ticket of  Bath150 which enables passes into Prasat Hin Muang Tum and Prasat Hin Phnom Rung in BuriramProvicne.
We had a nigth's rest in Buriram province and rose early to proceed to Surin province and visit Prasat Ta Muean.
Prasat Ta Muean is believed to be one of the 17 lodgings for travelers constructed by King Jayanavarman Vll from Yasodharapura (presently Yasothon Province) to Phimai, a district in Nakhon Ratchasima. Prasat Ta Muean Consists of Prasat Ta Muean Tode, an Aroghaya sala or health centre, built in the 13th century and still almost in perfect condition; and Prasat Ta Muean Thom, about 200 meter west of Prasat Ta Muean Tode, and the largest castle of the Prasat Ta muean complex. Prasat Ta Muean Thom consists of three pagodas with the principle in the centre. At the southeast court by the winding terrace there is a stone tablet with Khmer inscription.
We ended the trip at Prasat Hin Sdok Kok Thom in Sa Kaeo province. The castle was built of red sandstone and laterite in the Khmer architecture of Baphuonera. There are 2 walls, the exterior of laterite and the inner of red sandstone. There are portals on the East and the West, with winding terrace around the castle. At the center of the temple is a sandstone tower, which served as the main sanctuary and sheltering a lingam, symbol of Shiva.
The trip was tremendously exhausting though not a second of regret, in return for all the great archeological memories.
